Two years after it lost a major mountain bike race, Mountain Village has opened its arms wide to the cycling community.

On Monday, the Mountain Village Town Council unanimously approved a bike park in its backyard, leaving only legal details between the town and the ski company to be hashed out.

Bob Delves, Mountain Village’s mayor, said he hoped construction on the three-mile trail network could begin with a week.

“I certainly hope that we have this thing open this summer,” Delves said. “If we get some volunteer labor out there we can get this thing open fast.”

The move to build a bike park has delighted area riders but is also seen as a larger step toward a more rounded economic plan: “It’s a big piece of summer economy,” Delves said. “I think it’s a big step. I’m going to continue to push our recreation department to open up more trails…”

The bike park will wind over about 80 acres of Telluride Ski and Golf Company-owned land, located between the south side of the Gondola and the south side of Lift 2. It will cost roughly $50,000 to build, $28,000 of which will come from the pocket of the Telluride Mountain Village Homeowners Association, a town-wide HOA in the Village charged with, among other things, economic development.

TMVOA and Telski are both partners with the town in the park — TMVOA will fund some of the work and the trails snake over Telski property.

The park will include three new intermediate to expert level trails and feature a re-built Full Tilt downhill trail, a trail named after the bike race the Village lost last season as support from the ski area wavered due to environmental concerns.

The gravity-fed trails will be accessed from the St. Sophia Gondola terminal at mid-mountain and will be open during the Gondola’s summer operating hours, daylight and weather permitting.

The project marks the San Miguel Bike Alliance’s first major partnership. SMBA, as it’s known, is a local trails-advocacy group in its infancy.

“I’m really excited that everybody came together and saw the vision,” said Adam Black, a local Realtor and SMBA representative. “I kind of see it as stepping stone to something bigger. This is something we had kind of dreamed of. We couldn’t be happier.”

Black, too, sees the economic upside of the park. He lives in the Village year round, and “I see first hand our need for more sustainability, vibrancy,” he said. “Anything we can do to revitalize the core is extremely important.”

He thanked TMVOA and Telski for supporting the project.

The town has proposed the Ridge Trail be pedestrian only to relieve conflicts between bikers and hikers once the park is built.

Concert venue gets OK from board

Design board says yes to amphitheater, with caveats

A proposed concert venue in Mountain Village got a narrow approval from a town board Thursday, but not before it added a list of conditions.

The Telluride Ski and Golf Company wants to build a 5,000 person grass amphitheater on the Misty Maiden ski run, which runs up from Lift 4 at the center of town.

The Mountain Village Design Review Board voted 3-2 in favor of the amphitheater, which Telski has called a boon to business but which some neighbors worried would be too loud and too bright and run too late.

Now the decision goes to the Mountain Village Town Council. A date for that hearing has not yet been set.

The space is zoned for recreation, and the DRB kept in mind the Webster definition of recreation as “any play, amusement, etc., used to relax or refresh the body or mind.”

The discussion Thursday night went on for hours, and the DRB responded to the extensive public comments by putting nine restrictions on the amphitheater’s use.

The restrictions include limiting the hours of operation, monitoring the noise and lights, and making sure there’s enough parking for everyone.

Telski would be able to hold concerts only until 10 p.m. on the weekends. Or, if they get approval from the town council, the concerts could go until midnight. Most of the rest of the week, concerts would have to end at 8 p.m. They could go later on Thursday if the council gives its OK.

The DRB asked that Telski “monitor noise to meet industry standards regarding decibel levels of adjacent property lines.”

It asked that Telski rebuild a bridge that concertgoers would walk over to get to the event.

And it asked that Telski make sure that in the gondola parking structure, 20 percent of the spaces stay open for people who aren’t attending the concert.

One of the concerns is whether Mountain Village can handle the influx of 5,000 people. It assumes that getting on the gondola from Telluride to the Village would require waiting in line for an hour.

Telski asked that the amphitheater could be used all summer long, as long as the gondola is open.

The amphitheater sits on Telski land, and Telski would pay to re-grade the ski run. It estimates the project will cost $45,000.

If the town council quickly approves the concert venue, construction could begin this summer, Telski CEO Dave Riley has said, and could open as early as next summer.
