New housing complex in Telluride
A new affordable housing complex was on the agenda at the last Telluride Town Council meeting.
The new complex - a for-sale, price-capped, deed restricted structure - is being proposed for the southeast corner of town, on the bank of the San Miguel River where the RV and impound lots on Mahoney Drive are now.
The Telluride town council decided to go ahead with a new affordable housing project on the San Miguel River, developing Lot 48A of the Backman Village subdivision. Lance McDonald, program director for affordable housing, said that 48A would be the easiest and most feasible to develop. The town council decided in February that 48A was easier to develop than two other possible plots: one near Carhenge parking lot and the other on the east side of town.
Construction of more condos along the San Miguel would box the river into its current path, limiting the possibility for the river to meander.
White expressed concerns that perhaps another lot away from the river would have been a better choice for housing, perhaps the lot near Carhenge.
"What I would like to see is more space opened up by a future river restoration project to open up more space," said White. While housing is important and an urgent need, she said, she asked for more time to review the proposal. "An additional three weeks would give us a chance to look at the report from the river restoration folks."
Others disagreed. Pryor expressed the need not to stall out the process of developing the land, and council member Mark Buchsieb insinuated that White was more concerned about a river than about people who need a place to live.
